Backstory

History of India's Tea & Coffee

Starting the day with a steaming cup of chai is synonymous with being innately Indian. The ritual of drinking tea is deeply ingrained in Indian culture.

It starts our day right, refreshes millions of minds during break-time at the office, welcomes guests, sparks conversation, and brings smiles to every casual gathering.

The British introduced tea to India in the nineteenth century in order to break China’s monopoly on production. In the 1850s, tea was first cultivated in the mountains surrounding Darjeeling, a city perched on the foothills of the Himalayas.

Even though India is a country where tea is traditionally consumed, young people are now choosing coffee more frequently. Caffeine in coffee helps one feel energized, and freshly brewed coffee’s aroma is enticing.

Coffee arrived in India in the late seventeenth century.

An Indian who visited Mecca by the name of Baba Budan smuggled seven beans from Yemen back to India in 1670.
